SketchUp to photorealistic render — the fastest 2026 workflow
Three end-to-end routes from an untextured SketchUp elevation to a render your client will sign off. Real times, real costs, real trade-offs.
Quick answer
For a single-view residential elevation from SketchUp: AI (Visulixx or Krea) — 90 seconds, ~₹80, geometry-preserving. Lumion — half a day, ~₹6k loaded cost, full 3D control. V-Ray — 1–2 days, ~₹10k loaded cost, hero-shot photorealism ceiling.
Route 1 — SketchUp → V-Ray
Time: 6–12 hours for a first cut, plus 2–4 hours per revision.
Steps: Model prep in SketchUp (clean groups, purge components, close gaps) → Assign V-Ray materials → Set up V-Ray Sun + Sky + IES lights → Configure GI + reflections → Test render at 800px → Full render at 4K (30–90 min per view) → Photoshop cleanup + logo + branding.
Best for: Hero shots, competition submissions, magazine features. When photorealism is the whole point.
Weakness: Wall time. Impossible to iterate quickly with a client on Zoom.
Route 2 — SketchUp → Lumion
Time: 3–6 hours for first cut, 1–2 hours per revision.
Steps: Export SketchUp to .DAE or use the Lumion LiveSync plugin → Import into Lumion → Apply materials from Lumion library → Place vegetation, cars, people → Set sun position + weather → Set up camera → Render (5–20 min per view) → Optional Photoshop cleanup.
Best for: Client presentations, multi-view walkthroughs, animations. When you need to change camera angles on the fly.
Weakness: ₹1.5 lakh/year license, high-spec workstation required, real-time preview quality does not match final render quality.
Route 3 — SketchUp → AI render (Visulixx)
Time: 45–90 seconds per render.
Steps: In SketchUp: set camera to two-point perspective, position the elevation, click Export → 2D Graphic → PNG at 2000×1250. Upload to Visulixx → Pick a locked style → Receive render.
That's the entire workflow. No material assignment. No lighting setup. No render queue.
Best for: Concept validation, quick client walkthroughs, mass style exploration, any project where the design conversation matters more than the render itself.
Weakness: Doesn't do 3D walkthroughs or animation (yet). Doesn't do interiors (Visulixx is exterior-only). If your project demands V-Ray-tier hero shots, use AI for iteration and V-Ray for the final one.
Head-to-head
| Route | Time / view | Cost / view | Revision cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| V-Ray | 6–12 hrs | ~₹10k loaded | 2–4 hrs |
| Lumion | 3–6 hrs | ~₹6k loaded | 1–2 hrs |
| Visulixx | 90 sec | ₹62–80 | Included (free) |
How we actually run it in our studio
In our own studio work we use Visulixx for the first 3–4 concept iterations with the client — dusk mood, night mood, monsoon variant, three different palette experiments. Once the design is locked, if the project's budget justifies it (heritage, luxury villa, marketing campaign) we do a final V-Ray pass for the hero shot. Otherwise the Visulixx render is the final. The ratio in our books is about 8:1 in favour of AI-only projects.
